40 years for John G’s calls for a celebration at its relatively new home in Manalapan

In this age of corporate-owned retail chains, restaurants owned and operated by the same family for decades are farther and fewer between.

John G’s—a long-popular breakfast-and-lunch everyone-loves-the-cinnamon-nut-French-toast eatery that relocated two years ago from Lake Worth beach to Manalapan’s Plaza Del Mar—is clocking 40 years.

Forget the 40-is-the-so-called-new-20 stuff. It’s every gracious, hardworking minute of 40 years a family has devoted to a restaurant late patriarch John Giragos launched with big dreams in 1973 after being in the dry-cleaning business in Michigan.

The Giragos family—John G’s now is owned and operated by three of John’s grown children—is celebrating its 40th anniversary on Sept. 21, 7  a.m.-3 p.m., when, among other things, “The Big One” will be revived.

The late Giragos conceived “The Big One”—one egg, one slice of bacon, one slice of toast and one cup of coffee for a buck—in the early days of John G’s.

It’ll be offered during the 40th-anniversary celebration along with other specialty items, such as Detroit sliders—mini burgers with grilled onions and pickle—for 40 cents apiece.

Sales proceeds from The Big One and 40-cent sliders will benefit Hospice of Palm Beach County, which was instrumental in caring for Giragos before his 2010 death at age 81.

All comers to the Sept. 21 party at John G’s are invited to bring photos of themselves and their families enjoying visits at John G’s over the years. The photos will be displayed on a “board of memories” and later will be returned to their owners.

The 40th anniversary celebration also will include a drawing every hour with such prizes as gift certificates, t-shirts and hats.

For more information, call John G’s (264 S. Ocean Blvd.) at 588-7733 or visit www.john-gs.com.
